AMARILLA, S et al. PORCINE REPRODUCTIVE AND RESPIRATORY SYNDROME (PRRS): EPIDEMIOLOGY, SYMPTOMS AND LESIONS. Compend. cienc. vet [online]. 2015, vol.5, n.2, pp.38-46. ISSN 2226-1761.

ABSTRACT. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is the causative agent of a swine disease, named as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS). Despite efforts in controlling it and reducing its economic impact, PRRS is still considered as one of the most important diseases affecting the swine industry. PRRSV is divided into two distinct genotypes, European genotype or Type 1 (PRRSV-1) and North American genotype or Type 2 (PRRSV-2), with high biological, genetic and antigenic diversity among both genotypes. The wide biological, genetic and antigenic diversity of the different PRRSV strains, as well as the high economic losses to the pig industry associated with this disease justify studies that aim to clarify the pathogenic mechanisms triggered by the different virus strains. At present, no cases of PRRS have been reported in Paraguay, however it is important to consider it because of the increase in imported animals and semen from breeding countries of high-prevalence. This review aims to present the most important features of PRRSV in terms of epidemiology, symptoms and lesions.
