GUILLEN, R M. INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY APPLIED TO THE ANALYSIS OF UROLITHS OF DOGS AND CATS IN PARAGUAY . Compend. cienc. vet [online]. 2014, vol.4, n.2, pp.19-25. ISSN 2226-1761.

ABSTRACT. Urolithiasis is a recurrent pathology that results from multiple causes. Precise identification of the chemical composition is essential to manipulate the factors that contribute to the stone formation, making easier the choice for long term therapeutic measures. Recently the use of infrared espectroscopy has begun for the analysis of urinary calculi at national level, but till now it was limited to human samples. The current study aimed to present the first results of the implementation in Paraguay of the combined use of epimicroscopy and infrared espectroscopy for the analysis of uroliths from small animals, including 16 dogs and 5 cats. It was observed a higher frequency of urolith in females of both species, Schnauzer miniature dogs and mixed breed cats. 76% of the samples were formed by only one component. Struvite was the most frequent component and it was present in 81% and 80% of samples from dogs and cats respectively. Other components such as calcium oxalate and different phosphates such as: brushite, carbapatite, and amorphous phosphate were found in samples in variable frequencies that ranged between 6% to 20% in both species. Our data allow to show national capacity to implement internationally validated analytical technique and offer them as a tool to guide therapeutic choices of veterinaries to decrease recurrence risks.
