MAIDANA, L; AVALOS, A  and  CACERES, L. FIBROUS OSTEODYSTROPHY IN HORSES BRED ON Panicum maximum var Gatton panic PASTURES AT BOQUERÓN DISTRICT - ALTO PARAGUAY DEPARTMENT. Compend. cienc. vet [online]. 2014, vol.4, n.1, pp.30-35. ISSN 2226-1761.

ABSTRACT. In a beef cattle ranch at Boqueron District, Alto Paraguay Department, 100 Arabian and Quarter Horses in various categories are bred with cattle on Panicum maximum variety Gatton panic pastures as the main food. Bilateral and symmetrical increase of facial bones in 15 horses were reported, corresponding to nutritional fibrous osteodystrophy of facial bones, secondary to a serum calcium: phosphorus chronic alteration, attributable to long term phosphorus ingestion, because it´s high concentration in the soil. Blood serum biochemical profile performed at 4 equine showed high levels of calcium in 2 horses and high phosphorus in 4 animals. Bromatological examination showed normal levels and phosphorus, calcium and magnesium dosage in the soil confirmed high phosphorus concentration. Based on serum, Panicum maximum variety Gatton panic and soil laboratory studies can be concluded that high phosphorus concentration in the soil and bioavailability of it for the grass, ingested and absorbed, is the pathogenic mechanism involved in altering calcium : phosphorus relation in serum and induces prolonged parathormone (PTH) hypersecretion, promoting demineralization and calcium removal from bone, resulting in an overgrowth fibroblasts osteoidea with irregular matrix formation.
