ABSTRACT. Dioctophyma renale is a renal parasite species of fish-eating carnivores. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum urea / creatinine values and urine specific gravity in dogs with Dioctophyma renale inhabiting at Caazapá City and it`s relation to risk factors. Urine samples from 88 canines were analyzed in a private laboratory at Caazapá city, Paraguay, 18 of whom had Dioctophyma renale eggs, representing 20% of total samples. Serum samples were taken from each positive animal and results were evaluated at the Clinical Pathology Division, Pathology and Clinical Department, FCV - UNA. Serum urea and creatinine values were within the reference range, except one individual with a mild increase of it. All urine density values were within considered normal range indicating that healthy kidney function compensate parasitized organ. The survey analysis responses on risk factors was observed that 100 % of positive animals had street habits, presenting 94% of them fisherman neighbor, with highly significant differences (p < 0.01)), situation that indicates the fish could have acted as paratenic hosts , although owners of 64% positive dogs said their pets were not consuming raw fish. Most affected animals were fed with homemade food (p < 0.01), most affected animales aged 5-6 years ( p = 0.02), with no significant difference with regard to sex (p = 0.28).
