Abstract

In this research work, the characterization of a He-Ne laser using a Michelson interferometer and the tracker program is reported, where the theoretical foundations and the operation of the gaseous laser and the interferometer were also analyzed. Values for the wavelength were found using the interferometer by two methods, with a manual measurement and with a video analysis technique of the measurement with the tracker program, finding relative errors less than 1% with respect to the reference value of 632, 8 nm. With a simple method assisted by the tracker program, the length of coherence or temporal component of coherence was measured, for which a reference value was not found with this method for comparison. For the broadening of the beam, with measurements of the diameter of the beam at different distances an average angle value was found greater than that of the theoretical calculated value. The results of the measurements show the relatively good working condition of the old laser, with more than 50 years of use in the teaching practices of the Physics career.
