MIYAZAKI, Masayuki; DAVALOS, Victorio Enrique Oxilia y ENRIQUE, Mario Gustavo Leiva. Urban solid waste management: an environmental education strategy in Paraguay. Rep. cient. FACEN [online]. 2022, vol.13, n.1, pp.57-63. ISSN 2222-145X. https://doi.org/10.18004/rcfacen.2022.13.1.57.
The management of Urban Solid Waste -MSW- continues to be an unresolved issue for the vast majority of countries. Population growth, the increase in industries, changes in consumption patterns, and improvements in the standard of living are the factors that directly influence it. For this part of the region, an increase in the trend of per capita production of MSW is observed. Likewise, in the country it is estimated that only a small portion of the generated MSW is treated in sites with an environmental license. In fact, in- formation on the integral management of MSW is essential to initiate action based on strengthening environ- mental awareness, aiming at the construction of a sustainable society. This research comparatively analyzed the generation of MSW in Paraguay according to per capita production in kg / person / day, data which is contrasted with the world average and that of the region. Finally, these data are compared with those of Japan, since in said country approximately twenty years ago there was a situation similar to ours in terms of waste generation, but they managed to reduce their MSW generation gradually over time. In order to obtain the information, different sources have been consulted, such as: scientific journals and articles, popular magazines and websites, as well as interviews with key actors. The results reveal the importance of legal regulations and strengthening citizen environmental awareness as the main components that contribute to success.
