Abstract

In rural areas of Paraguay are widely used herbicides, among which several are made of glyphosate, these are systemic broad spectrum and act by inhibiting the activity of enzymes that synthesize aromatic aminoacids in plants. Studies have shown that they don’t have genotoxic activity, however, other research indicates that they can alter cellular processes in animals, which can present an environmental and health risk factor. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the mutagenic activity of three glyphosate-based herbicides (commercial formulation) in Drosophila melanogaster through SMART assay. For this, third stage larvae of D. melanogaster obtained from standard crossing and high bioactivation cross were chronically treated orally for 72 ± 5 hours with different concentrations (0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 mg.mL-1) of three glyphosate-based herbicides, Cyclophosphamide 2.61 and 0.78 mg.mL-1 were used as a mutagenic agent and as a control distilled water. The results obtained were not statistically significant, however, the herbicide GBH2 at the concentration of 10 mg.mL-1 showed significant differences compared to control in mutations number of small single spot type and total number of mutations observed.
