In Paraguay, ecoregions were established by Resolution SEAM No. 614/2013; this legislation was based on studies carried out in 1990 for the Eastern region and an expert based map of Chacoan ecoregions. There are few studies about the biogeography of Paraguay, but two of them were very important towards the identification of the biogeographical areas of Paraguay: The ecorregions of eastern Paraguay by Acevedo et al. (1990) and the ornitogeographical regions by Hayes (1995), were influenced by the definition of the forest regions of Tortorelli (1967). Likewise, the proposal of Dinerstein et al. (1995) influenced the proposals developed by Clay et al. (2005), Cacciali (2010) and Avila (2018).
