TULLO, Edgar. FACTORES RELACIONADOS AL USO DEL CONDÓN EN PARAGUAY. ENCUESTA NACIONAL DE SALUD SEXUAL Y REPRODUCTIVA 2004*: FACTORS RELATED TO CONDOM USE IN PARAGUAY. NATIONAL SURVEY OF SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH 2004*. Rep. cient. FACEN [online]. 2012, vol.3, n.1, pp.46-54. ISSN 2222-145X.

The purpose of this research is to identify factors associated with an increased likelihood of condom use among women, 15 to 44 years in Paraguay. Condom use during sexual intercourse is considered as double protection in prevention of pregnancy as well as HIV / AIDS. Our data source is the National Demography and Reproductive Health Survey 2004 (ENDSSR 2004). The ENDSSR 2004 is the only survey among a series of reproductive health surveys in Paraguay that includes a chapter of attitudes and practices regarding sexually transmitted infections. This permits us to analyze preventive behaviors associated with condom use during the last sexual intercourse. Our study analyzes condom use controlling by variables such as socio demographic characteristics like area of residency, age, marital status, socio economic status, years of study, language spoken. Other variables like knowledge of ways of preventing HIV transmission were also analyzed. We used a logistic regression model to estimate risk factors related to condom use. The dependent variable was use of condom during last sexual intercourse. The independent variables were those listed above. The results showed that women 15 to 19 years old, those with knowledge about prevention methods and ways of infection had a greater probability of condom use compared with women 40 to 44 years and those without knowledge about prevention methods and ways of infection. Married women, those with a lower socio economic status and less education resulted with a reduced probability of condom use.

Palavras-chave : Paraguay; condom use in last sexual intercourse; HIV/Aids.
