Abstract

MORTARI ARAUJO CORREA, Paulo. Wage differentials among bolivian, paraguayan, and peruvian migrants in the formal garment manufacturing sector in São Paulo, Brazil. 2019. Poblac.Desarro. [online]. 2022, vol.28, n.54, pp.42-54. ISSN 2076-054X.  https://doi.org/10.18004/pdfce/2076-054x/2022.028.54.042.

In this article, we intend to identify and analyze some of the factors associated with wage variations among Bolivian, Paraguayan, and Peruvian workers in the formal garment manufacturing sector in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2019. To fulfill this objective, we made use of the Annual Report on Social Information (RAIS) - an administrative data source that gathers information on formally registered workers provided by employer establishments in Brazil. Our findings include a selectivity carried out by such job sector in favor of men, who, furthermore, have more possibilities of access to better salaries than women, a situation that is also true when it comes to migrants who have graduated from high school (or achieved a higher degree) in comparison with their less-educated peers. Facts such as the likelihood of individuals placed in the race category of “white” being in a less favorable situation in terms of earnings - whose most plausible hypothesis revolves around issues regarding information reporting -, and Paraguayans having greater possibilities of getting higher salaries than Bolivians and Peruvians point to the need for conducting more thorough research on the subject, especially from a qualitative perspective.
