Abstract

PACHER, Julio Ramón. Educational production and its determinants in Paraguay according to PISA-D 2018. Poblac.Desarro. [online]. 2021, vol.27, n.53, pp.55-67. ISSN 2076-054X.  https://doi.org/10.18004/pdfce/2076-054x/2021.027.53.055.

This research seeks to evaluate the influence of individual, family and school variables on the educational production or acquisition of competences of 15-year-old students in Paraguay in 2018. The problem arises due to the low results in mathematical, science and reading competences of Paraguayan students in PISA-D. For this research, the estimation of an Education Production Function (EPF) using a Hierarchical Linear Model was used to know the influence of the selected determinants on the school skills of 15-year-old students in Paraguay. The main results reflect a strong positive relationship between the availability of mathematics books (school determinant) and educational skills. Similarly, initial education attendance as an individual determinant also has a strong direct influence, as does socioeconomic level as a family determinant. Likewise, the results indicate homogeneity among Paraguayan schools, since there is a low proportion of educational production or student skills explained by variability between schools.
