Abstract

SALDIVAR-DE SALINAS, Lidia Rosa; VILLAR, Luz; VALLEAU, Vanessa  and  BARRIOS-LEIVA, Oscar. Solid waste management system for the National University of Asunción, Paraguay. Period 2015-2019. Poblac.Desarro. [online]. 2021, vol.27, n.52, pp.15-29. ISSN 2076-054X.  https://doi.org/10.18004/pdfce/2076-054x/2021.027.52.015.

The research was carried out at the National University of Asunción in Paraguay and its General Objective was to design a Solid Waste Management System, which includes solid waste classification and treatment programs, technology, environmental awareness activities, strategies for temporary storage and final provision, which can be applied in the different faculties. The research approach was of a mixed type: qualitative - quantitative, descriptive level, cross-sectional - prospective. Main findings: solid waste management focused on cleaning and collection, inadequate source segregation, isolated initiatives to take advantage of waste, insufficient infrastructure, 70% of the total waste generated is potentially recyclable, accumulation of solid waste in the open air, non-compliance of environmental requirements, negative impacts of greater importance in temporary storage sites. The economic study according to financial parameters revealed; decrease in collection costs, recovery of investment, and viability of system installation. Results of the pilot project: ecological competition and composting; 356 kg of paper and cardboard, 126 kg of PET-type plastic, 8.73 kg of aluminum were collected from the ecological competition and approximately 155 kg of litter compost and 142 kg of litter compost with other organic waste were obtained from the organic competition, the latter richer in nutrients, ac-cording to analysis. It is concluded that the implementation of the aforementioned System will entail economic, social and environmental benefits, and will also allow the National University of Asunción to be a benchmark in the proper management of solid waste in Paraguay.
