Abstract

SALAZAR ESPINOZA, César  and  BURGOS LOPEZ, Diego. Subjective-wellbeing at the face of natural disasters. The case of the 2010 earthquake in Chile. Poblac.Desarro. [online]. 2020, vol.26, n.51, pp.83-97. ISSN 2076-054X.  https://doi.org/10.18004/pdfce/2076-054x/2020.026.51.083.

It well known that natural disasters have a significant effect on material well-being. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of natural disasters on the individual life satisfaction. For this purpose, we use data from the 2010 LAPOP survey for Chile, which contains a series of questions regarding the earthquake of the same year that affected the country. After estimating an ordered Probit model, results show a negative effect on the subjective-wellbeing of the affected population, particularly those who report damage to their home or/and an injury.

Keywords : Subjective well-being; happiness; life satisfaction; natural disaster; earthquake.
