ATLATENCO-IBARRA, Quetzalli; DE LA GARZA-CARRANZA, María Teresa  y  HERNANDEZ-GONALEZ, Salvador. Financing for old age of young Mexicans. Poblac.Desarro. [online]. 2020, vol.26, n.51, pp.71-82. ISSN 2076-054X.  https://doi.org/10.18004/pdfce/2076-054x/2020.026.51.071.

Income in old age comes from various sources. In Mexico, the main ones are pensions granted by social security systems and federal programs such as the so-called “Pension for the well-being of older adults”. The objective of this work is to determine how young Mexicans plan to finance their old age and what they are doing about it. For this, the results of the Financial Inclusion Survey carried out in 2018 by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography were analyzed. It is observed that a large part of young Mexicans between 18 and 29 plan to cover their expenses in old age with a pension. Considering that this source of income would have to be granted by some social security system and that, in Mexico, entitlement is a function of people's employment situation or their family dependency relationship, and that the prevailing financing model transfers all risks to individuals, it is concluded that it is essential to consider how to encourage voluntary pension savings in that age group. One way to do this is the implementation of strategies that have been used in various countries of the world.

Palabras clave : Youth; old-age pensions; voluntary savings.
