In Ecuador, informality is an important source of employment generation, which is why there is an excessive growth of informal businesses in the country. In this context, it is intended in this article to carry out an approach from a descriptive perspective of the informal seller that has become a factor in the segmentation of the urban labor market for workers in this sector. In this sense, the objective of this research is to characterize small businesses in the informal sector; Therefore, the investigation is based on the analysis of the effects of the empirical exploration of informal merchants in the city of Azogues, capital of the province of Cañar located in zone 6 of the Republic of Ecuador; the inquiry has a mixed approach (qualitative - quantitative); as techniques for the collection of information, the structured survey and the interview were used, as well as data from the different public institutions linked to the research topic; that is, primary and secondary sources of information were used. The results show important findings such as: the number of workers, income level, expenditure level, the time that the informal business activity develops, the education level of the owner, the area occupied by the business, among others. It is concluded that the investigative document allowed to know the diverse and essential characteristics of street vendors as autonomous merchants in the city of Azogues - Ecuador.
