The phenomenon of poverty in Paraguay, has been experiencing a downward trend, historically in the country in poverty and especially extreme poverty has had its point of concentration in rural areas. In 2014, 22.4% of the population lived in poverty, affecting 16.2% of the urban population and 32.0% of the rural population, in terms of extreme poverty, it affects 10.5% of the population, where 73.6% are people from rural areas. This paper examines poverty from a gender perspective, on the assumption of the beginning of a process of feminization of poverty; the goal is to analyze the situation of poor women nationwide from the household survey in 2014. The main results shows that the national poverty reveals that 18.1% of women are in this situation, compared to 16.6% of men, in rural areas poverty is larger for both sexes, being women who have a higher poverty level, 26.5% versus 25.2% of men. In poverty conditions, the total unemployment nearly triple (11.5%) compared to the non-poor (4.7%), a situation that is worse in urban areas, more severely affecting poor women than men (24.2% versus 15.4%).
