Introduction:

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) focuses on aspects related to the perception of health experienced and declared by the person, in different dimensions such as physical, mental, social, general perception of health and The satisfaction achieved, measured at different levels.

Objective:

To determine the HRQoL patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who are treated at the Department of Internal Medicine of the National Hospital (Itauguá, Paraguay) in 2016.

Methodology: The instrument used as measurement was the Diabetes-39 questionnaire which is a multidimensional scale, which is completed by the patient. The higher the score, the worse HRQL.

Results:

101 diabetics were surveyed. The mean age was 57 ± 16 years (range 29-93 years). There were 55 males (54%) and 46 females (46%). The predominant marital status was married (64%) and there were predominant subjects with secondary schooling (47%). The mean HRQoL was 57, a value that is above the standard established by the questionnaire.

49% of samples presented poor HRQL compared to 51% with good HRQL. The domains most affected by ranking order were: energy and mobility (60), anxiety-worriesome (62) and sexual functioning (66).

Among the variables studied, the male sex was a factor related to good HRQoL.

Conclusions:

49% of the sample had poor HRQL and 51% had good HRQL.
