Abstract

Introduction: atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common adult arrhythmia, represents a risk factor capable of triggering complications with high morbidity and mortality. Objective: to determine the prevalence of AF in patients at the Regional Hospital of Coronel Oviedo. Methodology: observational, cross-sectional, retrospective, descriptive and non-probabilistic, we reviewed 59 medical records of women and men older than 40 years admitted to the area Medical Clinic Regional Hospital of Coronel Oviedo between the months of January to December 2014. Results: mean age was 67.5 ± 13 years. The frequency of AF is 11.86%; being more frequent in males with 85.71%, the most affected age group was that of over 70, where 71.4% of cases was observed. Conclusions: frequency of AF is 11.86%; more frequent in males and the age group most affected by larges is in the over 70 years.
