Abstract

LOPEZ NOGUERA, Edgar Alcibíades. Risk factors for the development of neurological complications in patients with nontraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage. Rev. Nac. (Itauguá) [online]. 2014, vol.6, n.1, pp.25-39. ISSN 2072-8174.

Introduction: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) represents the extravasation of blood, generally sudden, due to the rupture of an artery or vein in the subarachnoid space. It constitute a medical and surgical emergency, the prognosis depends partly on early diagnosis, of its presence and etiology. Objectives: To determine the risk factors influencing the development of neurological complications. Methods: Retrospective case-control study of non-traumatic SAH patients treated at the National Hospital of Itauguá between 2010 to 2013. Results: The average age of cases were 53 years old and the controls were 50 years old, with females predominance. Hypertension was the most frequent medical antecedent. Smoking and drinking were present at a low percentage. Blood pressure had a higher tendency in cases. In the Glasgow score on admission, there was a significant difference with a value of 11 for cases and 14 for controls. We found aneurysms in 55.7% and there were no findings in 28%. The white blood cell count and blood glucose were higher in cases. Conclusion: Glasgow scales, Fisher score and Hunt-Hess score proved to be important prognostic indicators for development of complications. The significant finding of elevated levels of white blood cells and blood glucose in cases, should be studied in larger trials to determine the importance thereof.

Keywords : subarachnoid hemorrhage; hydrocephalus; cerebral aneurysm; risk factor.
