ABSTRACT Teratomas are germ cell tumors that consist of two or more germ layers. They are more common in children but may occur in adults in different locations. Those in the retroperitoneum are rare tumors, accounting for 0.2% to 0.6% of neoplasms in general. We report a case of a female patient of 33 years, admitted for abdominal pain of moderate to severe intensity, nausea, vomiting and feeling feverish. He underwent a surgery and we proceeded to resection of a retroperitoneal cystic tumor. From the macroscopic point of view, the tumor presented 30 cm of diameter, weighing 1350 grams, was cystic, multilobular, was covered partially by a beige adipose tissue. Pathology reported a benign cystic teratoma.
