GENES BARRIOS, Viviana Beatriz. Risk factor associated With preterm delivery. Rev. Nac. (Itauguá) [online]. 2012, vol.4, n.2, pp.8-14. ISSN 2072-8174.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Preterm birth is one that occurs before 37 weeks of gestation. The estimated frequency is between 5% and 11%. The importance of detecting this complication of pregnancy is that it is an important cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Objective: To identify risk factors associated with preterm delivery, both spontaneous and induced. Materials and methods: We conducted a case-control study in the Chair and Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the FCM-U.N.A. We included 346 patients who delivered in the period January to December 2011. The study analyzed the association of risk factors with preterm birth measuring the OR and its confidence intervals at 95%. Results: The presence of shortened cervix in the second trimester (OR 9.93 95% CI 2.17 to 62.98), preeclampsia during the current pregnancy (OR 4.15 95% CI 1.75 to 10.21), multiple pregnancy (OR 15.14 95% CI 2.06 to 312.19) and a history of previous preterm birth (OR 3.43 95% CI 1.02 to 12.76) were significantly associated with the presence of preterm delivery. No significant association was found with the previous parity, smoking and premature rupture of membranes. Conclusion: the risk factors that were significantly associated with preterm labor were shortened cervical length in the second trimester, a history of previous preterm delivery, multiple pregnancy and preeclampsia.
