ABSTRACT Introduction: Despite advances in therapy, the AIDS epidemic continues to grow. In Latin America, the average prevalence of HIV infection is 0.5%. In Paraguay, since the first cases of HIV / AIDS through December 2010, the surveillance system of the Ministry of Public Health and Welfare (MSP y BS) has recorded 9,092 people living with HIV / AIDS (PLWHA). Objectives: To establish the monthly trend of new HIV / AIDS in inpatient and outpatient National Hospital from January 2010 to December 2011, the proportion of new PLHIV and outpatients by medical department, the incidence of HIV in newly pregnant women, the number of babies born to mothers with HIV or exposed newborns, the rate of perinatal transmission and clinical characterization of new epidemiological PLWHA assisted in the institution. Methodology: A descriptive epidemiological observational, with active surveillance system in the period January 2010 to December 2011 at the National Hospital. Results: During the study period were captured 190 new PLHA. The average age of new PLWHA was 31 years, 104 (55%) were female and 86 (45%) male. Of the newly pregnant women who came to prenatal, 97% were tested for HIV, 39 newborns were exposed to HIV. AIDS cases were mostly men. Came mainly from the Central Department. The route of transmission was sexual in 83% of cases. Conclusions: During the study period was 190 cases of PLWHA detectad, of which 137 were new cases, with a monthly average of 8 new PLWHA, seeing an increasing trend of new PLHIV in 2011 relative to 2010 National Hospital; of newborns in outpatient follow-up, none has been detected as infected with HIV. Of the newly pregnant women were diagnosed as PLHIV 0.7%. The most frequent disease markers chronic diarrhea, candidiasis, prolonged fever, cachexia and cerebral toxoplasmosis. The lethality of the new cases of PLWHA was 10%.
