GALEANO, Fernando  e  SANABRIA-BAEZ, Gabriela. DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH PARENTERAL NUTRITION IN NEONATES OF HOSPITAL OF CLINICS OF SAN LORENZO - PARAGUAY IN 2015. Rev. Inst. Med. Trop. [online]. 2018, vol.13, n.2, pp.3-9. ISSN 1996-3696.  https://doi.org/10.18004/imt/20181323-9.

Introduction:

Parenteral nutrition is a useful and important strategy for feeding and supporting newborns with different clinical conditions, because this technique is not harmless, it is necessary to monitor their use and, above all, the complications they may have.

Material and methods:

This is a retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study in the period January-December 2015 in which neonates were admitted to the neonatology department of the Hospital de Clínicas San Lorenzo.

Results:

59 neonates were included, 73% were premature, 32.9 + 3 weeks of gestation, mean birth weight 1,751.6 + 256 grams; Size 41.2 ± 3 cm; Cephalic perimeter 29.5 + 2 cm.

Low birth weight (<1,500 grams) was the most frequent condition, 52.5%; For which neonates warranted parenteral nutrition, infection was the metabolic complication found in 71% of infants with parenteral nutrition.

Surgeries and infections were the statistically significant gestational age-associated pathological conditions in preterm and term infants. Growth retardation, the presence of at least comorbidity and surgery were the pathological conditions associated with the neonate's weight. Mortality was 18.6%

Conclusions:

The majority of patients requiring parenteral nutrition were premature, weighing less than 1500 grams. The infections in this group of patients are not only of bacterial origin, also fungi are registered. Although the evolution was favorable in many infants, there is still a high mortality rate
