Abstract

SAN MIGUEL DE VERA, Cristina. Circulation of rabies virus in Paraguay. Rev. Inst. Med. Trop. [online]. 2016, vol.11, n.2, pp.21-32. ISSN 1996-3696.  https://doi.org/10.18004/imt/201611221-32.

The rage has 3 cycles: Urban, Rural and Silvestre. The urban rabies is characterized by the presence of the disease in domestic animals (dogs and cats). The hematophagous bat (Desmodus rotundus) is the main transmitter of the disease in herbivores in South America due to its way of feeding, constituting the Cycle Rural. In the wild cycle, transmission occurs among animals such as wolf, coati, monkey, mongoose, etc. These animals may also be a food source for hematophagous bats. The Air Cycle is important in the maintenance among the various species of bats that disseminate the etiological agent, because they cross geographic barriers. All species of hematophagous or non-bats are susceptible to rabies, and can transmit disease. The study consisted of knowing the current epidemiology of human and animal rabies in Paraguay. Through an epidemiological, descriptive, retrospective cross-sectional study. The records of clinical records and statistical records of the National Antirrábico of MSPyBS, focused on the two primary areas, which make the epidemiological study of Rabies: a - Morphobia by hydrophobia by Department from 1990 to July-2016 and b- Animal mortality: From 1995 to July-2016. Currently the incidence of rabies is in Animals of Economic Interest (ADIE), produced by the air cycle; therefore it becomes one of the most serious aggressions for our country. The first case of human rabies in Paraguay transmitted by bats was in 2002; And by the figures reported later in animals, we would be in the presence of the air cycle. With the exception of Asunción, Alto Paraná and Guairá, all Departments report Rabia in ADIE. Paraguay is currently seeking the certification of "canine rabies free country", since no cases of the disease have been reported in animals for at least 7 years in the Eastern Region and for humans this figure extends to 12 years . Technicians in zoonoses are working hard on the capture of wild animals in the Paraguayan Chaco for later analysis. In this way it will be possible to demonstrate the circulation cut of rabies virus V1 and V2.
