ABSTRACT The extent of the Nuchal Translucency (NT) is a widely accepted method in screening for chromosomal abnormalities. His technique is well described and standardized, referring as increased when the measure is above the 95th percentile. Its combination with maternal age, nasal bone and biochemical markers, can detect approximately 90% of fetuses with trisomy 21 and in isolated form 70% with a false positive rate of 5%. Have been attributed as the cause of his increase to the heart failure, alteration in the composition of the extracellular matrix, hypoproteinaemia fetal, venous congestion in the head and neck, failure of lymphatic drainage, congenital infections or fetal anemia. Its growth has been associated with abortion or fetal deaths, fetal abnormalities elderly and among them those of heart or genetic syndromes, associated to infections, macrosomia and even delay in development, so that not only is confined to the chromosomal alterations. Hence lies its importance of knowing the management of these patients, in particular if the karyotype is normal. Key Words:nuchal translucency, aneuploidies, ultrasound week 11 - 13+6, screening.
