ABSTRACT Objectives: to determine the association between liver cirrhosis and diabetes and the etiological and epidemiological features. Patients and Methods: the series included medical records of patients with liver cirrhosis diagnosis hospitalized in the Medic Semiology´s Department, Clinicas Hospital between March 2006 and February 2011. It is a transversal, descriptive and retrospective study. Outcomes: from a total of 71 patients, 13 were diagnosed with Diabetes (18%). The average age was 57 years old. 62% were from male gender. The most frequent etiology in patients with liver cirrhosis and diabetes was alcohol (62%). 46% of patients were in Child- Pugh stage C. 46% of patients knew about their diabetes before the cirrhosis diagnosis. None of the patients received oral antidiabetics. 100% of patients underwent infections. Conclusions: The association between liver cirrhosis and diabetes is still being discussed and barely noticed. There is a lack of prospective studies that would allow us to have a clear vision of the impact of diabetes on patients with liver cirrhosis. Key Words: liver cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance.
