ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Medical students are exposed to a greater number of mental disorders than the general population owing to the demands of the career. Between these disorders anxiety and depression stand out due to their superior numbers to those found in the general population. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) is a brief, highly structured interview of major psychiatric disorders in ICD-10. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: It was a analytic cross-sectional study conducted at the School of Medicine of the National University of Asuncion (UNA). The epidemiological and demographic variables were collected with a form previously validated. The frequency of mental health disorders in students was evaluated using the MINI test, validated in Spanish, such as screening method. RESULTS: 91 students were evaluated, 58 female sex (63.7%) and 33 male sex (36.3%). The mean age was 21 ± 1 years; 35 students (58.2%) had at least one mental disorder. The most frequent diagnoses were: past hypomanic episode (21 students; 23.1%), current depressive disorder (21; 23.1%), generalized anxiety disorder (15; 16.5%) and agoraphobia (14; 15.4%). DISCUSSION: Mental health disorders were frequent in these medical students; past hypomania episode, current depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and agoraphobia were the most frequently diagnosed mental health disorders.
