ABSTRACT Laryngeal cancer is a debilitating disease that has a significant impact on voice and swallowing, and consequently on the life of the suffering patient. This paper aims to review the most relevant results of conservative larynx surgery carried out in the most important referral centers of the country. A retrospective, observational, cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical component in the time period between 1985 and 2010 study was conducted. Cancer of the larynx is the most common cancer in otorhinolaryngology and the second cause of death in the specialty. However, its incidence has increased in recent years, as well as its frequency in females, being the male the most affected gender. The most important risk factor is tobacco use, followed by alcohol. The ideal treatment option will depend on the general condition of the patient and clinical stage of the tumor, which is going to be reflected in the long term post surgical follow up. Treatment is based on surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy; on their own or in combination. This paper describes the benefits of performing conservative surgery preserving the functions of phonation and respiration of the larynx. Key Words: Cancer of the larynx; Conservative surgery of the larynx; Cancer in otolaryngology.
