ABSTRACT Introduction: The inappropriate use of antibiotics is considered a serious public health problem, as it contributes to the increased bacterial resistance, which, increases costs and mortality from infectious diseases. In this regard, the World Health Organization has recommended a number of strategies based on national drug policies. In Paraguay, various aspects of the inappropriate use of antibiotics have been documented, with still insufficient answers. Research and interventions focused on consumers, pharmacies and private sector are almost non existence. Materials and Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study in residents of a neighborhood in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay was carried out Participants were randomly selected and the selected participants were surveyed about the consumption characteristics of drugs used in the last 30 days. Results: The most commonly used drugs were NSAIDs: ibuprofen, paracetamol, dipyrone and aspirin; for the treatment of painful conditions, inflammatory, flu and fever. Antibiotics were consumed by 30% of the participants, amoxicillin and cephalosporin were the most frequent ones. The pediatric population was the most frequent consumers and pharmacy was the main source.Conclusion: This work showed many worrying aspects in the misuse of antibiotics in this neighborhood that merit interventions, especially in the form of learning basics of health and rational use of drugs.
