ABSTRACT Carbohydrate counting is a method that helps patients to choose their food and meal planning by controlling the amount of carbohydrates eaten at each of them, for better glycemic control. It has been shown through studies and clinical trials that medical nutrition therapy glycated hemoglobin decreased approximately 1% in type 1 diabetes and 1-2% in type 2 diabetes. This method has grown in popularity in the United States since the end of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, which was used effectively. The Dietary Reference Intakes recommended for adult consumption of 45-65% of total energy for carbohydrates or a minimum of 130 grams per day to meet the daily nutritional needs and minimize the risk of chronic diseases. Objective: To present the carbohydrate counting method as an option for the nutritional management of patients with diabetes mellitus. Keywords: Carbohydrate Counting, Medical Nutrition Therapy, Diabetes Mellitus, Gestational Diabetes.
