ABSTRACT Currently, bariatric surgery has become the treatment of choice for morbid obesity. Psychological and psychiatric aspects have been described by several studies as crucial when considering treatment (and evolution) of obesity. The thorough knowledge of these aspects is necessary to reach successful and sustainable outcomes for bariatric surgery. The present review focuses on the psychological aspects of patients with morbid obesity, the psychiatric evaluation of bariatric surgery candidates and on the work of the outpatient clinic of the Department of Psychiatry of the School of Medical Sciences of the National University of Asuncion. Keywords: bariatric surgery, morbid obesity, psychological, psychiatric evaluation.
