Abstract

ABSTRACT Suicidal behavior has increased in Paraguay the last years. Suicidal behavior spectrum includes: suicide, suicide attempt, suicide threat and suicidal thoughts. Suicide provocates close to half of world´s violent death. There are sociodemographic, bilogical, familial and psychopathological factors that plays a rol as risk factors. It has investigated retrospectively a population who commited suicide or suicide attempt in Paraguay from 1998 to 2010. It has been found rates of suicide about 4/100.000 people and suicide attempt about 1/100.000 people during 1998 - 2004 and suicide rate of 5/100.000 people and suicide attempt rate of 2/100.000 people during 2005 - 2010. It has been projected by 2015 rate of suicide about 4/100.000 people and for suicide attempt about 2/100.000 people. It has found that males commited suicide 2 and 3 times more than females and attempt to suicide in equal proportion between 1998 - 2002 and 2003 - 2010, respectively. Higher suicide and suicide attempt rates was found in Concepción, Amambay and Alto Paraguay. Most used suicide way was hanging in both sex and for suicide attempt way in males was the knife and in females was poisoning. Suicide and suicideattempt was commited more often between 18 to 29 years old. Keywords: Suicide; suicide attempt; suicide threat; suicidal thought; suicidal behavior.
