ABSTRACT Cerebrovascular disease or stroke is a neurological disease with a large public health impact due to its high incidence. Strokes are the third most common cause of death after heart disease and all cancers and the leading cause of disability and a major cause of long term disability. Dysphagia is a common symptom present in these patients it increases the incidence of malnutrition and aspiration pneumonia. All patients admitted with a diagnosis of stroke should undergo nutritional assessment at hospital admission, to diagnose the presence of dysphagia, and nutritional status at an early stage. These patients usually are malnourished on admission or at risk of malnutrition therefore, the initiation of appropriate nutritional therapy is an essential part of treatment for a favorable outcome in this disease. Keywords: stroke, dysphagia, malnutrition, nutritional therapy.
