ABSTRACT Background: The most frequent operation performed for hernia repair is hernioplasty. Objetives: To determine demographic characteristics, variety, classification, and outcomes of the surgical repair. Patients and method: The series included 229 patients who underwent elective inguinal hernioplasty between the years 2005-2009, at the First Department of Surgical Clinics. It is a longitudinal, retrospective study, which include the following variables: demographic characteristics, co-morbidity, variety of hernia, Gilbert’s classification, options of surgical repair, and early outcomes. Outcome: The average age was 46 years-old, 90% were males, 84% of patients developed indirect hernia, 7% had direct hernia, and 5% of them were mixed hernias. The location was on the right side in 112 patients, and on the left side in 99 patients, while 18 were bilateral. There were 46 patients with high blood pressure, 8 patients with hypertensive heart disease, 2 with ischemic heart disease, 5 patients were smokers, and 2 suffered from diabetes mellitus; 10 patients suffered benign prostatic hypertrophy, 5 had asthma or suffered from drug allergy, and 5 patients suffered from psyquiatric disease; 18% of patients developed the Gilbert’s type I hernia, 45% the type II, 18% the type III, 4% the type IV, 8% the type V, and the remaining belonged to the type. VI and VII. Two hundreds and seven patients underwent the Plugstein’s surgical repair, and the Lichtenstein technique was accomplished in 22. Postoperative complications were hematoma in 3 cases, and seroma in 2. One patient developed surgical wound infection. Three (1.3%) patients developed early recurrent hernia. Conclusions: Inguinal hernia is more frequent in the 5th decade of life and in male gender. Indirect hernia is the most frequent variety, and most of them are Gilbert’s type II. Elective hernioplasty allows satisfactory outcomes and a low rate of recurrences. Keywords: Hernia inguinal. Hernioplastia. Plugstein
