Concordance of nutritional values between anthropometry and bioelectrical impedance in patients with heart failure. An. Fac. Cienc. Méd. (Asunción) [online]. 2010, vol.43, n.2, pp.43-48. ISSN 1816-8949.

ABSTRACT Chronic Heart Failure (CHF) is frequently associated with malnutrition and this is an independent marker of poor prognosis. The body composition of these patients is altered by pathophysiological changes, so it is difficult to perform a nutritional assessment and there is no one single method that can be used exclusively. In this observational study we conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study of 30 patients with a diagnosis of CHF admitted to the Hospital de Clínicas (HC) of the FCM, UNA, from March 2008 to March 2009. The goal was to determine the correlation between the results of nutritional assessment estimated by anthropometric variables grouped into one score compared to bioimpedance (BIA). The results show a high rate of malnutrition and even cardiac cachexia, with the specific frequency varying according to the method of nutritional assessment used. A low level of concordance (kappa = 0.3) between the nutritional assessment according to the score and the BIA was observed. Nevertheless we believe that the use of the score would be useful for an easy, fast, and economical method. Key words: Heart Failure, Anthropometry, Electric Impedance
