ABSTRACT This is a descriptive and retrospective analysis of the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics and treatment results of 39 patients with tonsil cancer that attended the Othorhinolaryngology Service of the Hospital de Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of the National University of Asuncion, Paraguay from 1994 to 2008. As in the revised bibliography, the epidermoid carcinoma of the palatine tonsil was the most frequent (40%) and located in the oropharynx. The patients were 40 to 75 five years old, with a mean of 65 years old, predominant among males (98.4) and with a strong relation with alcoholism and smoking. All patients had moderated and poorly differentiated epidermoid carcinoma. Only one of them had a synchronic second primary tumor. Most of the patients (82%; 32/39) were stratified as EC: IV being the prognosis discouraging. Only 8 of these patients were operable and 2 of these are alive without any tumor and three are with tumors and palliative chemotherapy (CH). Nine patients were subjected exclusively to radiotherapy, two are alive and seven passed away. Other nine patients received concurrent treatment, only 1 is alive without a tumor and the remaining eight died. Thirteen patients in advanced stage received palliative treatment and they all died. Of the three treatments modalities used (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy), the combination of surgery and radiotherapy is the one which presented best results but survival rate did not surpass 20 as in bibliography that refers a value that did not surpass 30%.
