ABSTRACT Introduction: Autoimmune blistering diseases are a group of relatively rare entities characterized by the presence of blisters and caused by an autoimmune mechanism. They are classified into intradermal and subepidermal. In this last group, the most frequent are pemphigus vulgaris and foliaceus, bullous pemphigoid of the mucous membranes, linear IgA disease and dermatitis herpetiformis. In recent years many drugs have been included in the therapeutic arsenal that has sometimes changed the prognosis of these diseases. Objective: To describe the frequency and clinical characteristics of patients with autoimmune blistering diseases in the Department of Dermatology of the Hospital de Clínicas of the FCM - UNA and classify the types of autoimmune blistering diseases found. Material and Methods: This paper is a descriptive cross sectional retrospective study of 3,000 cases that attended the Department of Dermatology of the Hospital de Clínicas in the period 2002-2007. Results: There were 71 (2.73%) patients with autoimmune blistering diseases being pemphigus foliaceus the most frequent with 36 (56.7%) patients. Conclusion: Blistering diseases are important consultation pathologies in the Department of Dermatology of the Hospital de Clínicas.
