Resumo

Objective: To determine the levels of understanding and acceptance of hypertension and diabetes mellitus as a disease at the moment of the diagnosis of outpatients of the First Clinical Chair of the Clinical Medical Hospital, in 2007. Materials and Methods: Quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study of patients consulting for the first time for hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus (DM). The sampling was a non-probability sampling, intentional. We included the firsts 120 patients diagnosed with hypertension and DM (60 patients for each group). The data collection instrument was the interview form of each patient. The population of arterial hypertension and diabetes were mostly from the capital city and metropolitan area, prevailing married people, unskilled occupations, primary level of education and ages 51-70 years in both groups. The understanding in hypertensive patients without taking into account the educational level was 78.4% and the acceptance 91.6% while the understanding in the diabetics was 88.3% and acceptance 90%. Conclusions: The acceptance and understanding of hypertension and diabetes was high without taking into account the educational level but with knowledge of popular level. Very high percentages of patients of all educational levels understood and accepted their health problem.
