Resumen

Association between Depression and Diabetes Mellitus. An. Fac. Cienc. Méd. (Asunción) [online]. 2008, vol.41, n.3, pp.27-33. ISSN 1816-8949.

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of depression in diabetic patients and compare whether there are differences in the metabolic profiles of the depressed and non-depressed patients. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study with an analytical component carried out in 202 diabetic patients. The diagnosis of depression was made using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results: We found depression in 47.5% of the patients, 76% of them were women and 24% men, a marginally significant difference (p=0.05). The mean glycemia was 183.1±92.1 mg/dl and the HbA1c was 8.9 ± 2.3%. In the depressed patients, 23.2% presented acceptable controls and 76.8% unacceptable controls. While 25% of the non-depressed patients presented acceptable values, 75% of them presented unacceptable values (p=0.96). The mean HbA1c in the depressed patients was 9±2.2 % and 8.9 ±2.5% in the non-depressed individuals. Mean total cholesterol was 213.1±53.7 mg/dl, 33.8% of the depressed patients had normal cholesterol while 66.2 % had hypercholesterolemia. The non-depressed individuals showed normal cholesterol values in 45.5 % of them and high values in 54.5% (p=0.18). Mean triglycerides was 174.6±136.1 mg/dl. (Depressed patients, 48.7% had normal values and 51.3% had high values. Non-depressed, 51.3% had normal values and 48.7% had high values, p=0.87). Conclusion: The prevalence of depression in diabetic patients was 47.5% and most of them were women. There were not statistically significant differences in the metabolic profile.
