CUEVAS SARRIA, Ricardo; MENA CANATA, Carlos; LEZCANO, Nicolás y MARTINEZ, Edgar. Forensic radiology: Computed tomography(CT) of paranasal sinuses as a method to identify people. An. Fac. Cienc. Méd. (Asunción) [online]. 2008, vol.41, n.1-2, pp.43-50. ISSN 1816-8949.
The simple radiography, considered as the ideal method for the assessment of the inflammatory disease of the paranasal sinuses, is replaced by the Computed Tomography, as it presents a better valuation of the ostiomeatal complex, the sphenoid and the ethmoidal cells. In the legal scope, a simple radiography can be used for the recognition of corpses and living persons, by the paranasal sinuses or other parts of the body that can contain particular information. With an increasing request of paranasal sinuses Computed Tomography's, followed by the technological advances, we account with better quality images, without considerable variations of techniques and distance of the patient from the X-Ray equipment. In other terms, this mean that by using Computed Tomography, we obtain better results than by using X-Ray equipment. A considerable amount of patients undergo studies during their entire life, with higher percentage between the age of 15 and 30, regardless of gender and other social factors. By this, plus the particular features of the paranasal sinuses and their major resistance to many pathological destructions. We certainly believe that these studies are ideal for the identification of human beings. The major advantages of these techniques are their low cost, higher sensibility, excellent image qualities in all views and easy storage system
