Abstract

CARRON ALVARADO, Agustín; LOVERA, Mónica; DUARTE SERVIAN, Edgar  and  AYALA LUGO, Rosa María. Intraoperative 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) application during primary trabeculectomy. An. Fac. Cienc. Méd. (Asunción) [online]. 2005, vol.38, n.4, pp.60-64. ISSN 1816-8949.

Purpose: To analize the effect of intraoperative 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) application during primary trabeculectomy in reducing the Intraocular Pressure (IOP). Methods: We did a prospective study, quasiexperimental, in 18 patients with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) or Chronic angle closure glaucoma (CACG). A primary trabeculectomy was performed with application of 5-FU (50mg/mL) for five minutes. Trabeculectomy failure was considered if IOP ≥ 21 mmHg. Results: The mean IOP at diagnosis was 42 mmHg (SD ± 15). We had a 83,3% (15/18) of surgical success (PIO ≤ 21 mmHg) with intraoperative 5-FU. The mean IOP at the end of the study was 13 mmHg (SD ± 2,25). Conclusion: The use of intraoperative 5-FU is a safe and effective procedure in reducing the IOP value in POAG or CACG.
