Abstract

GOMEZ CANTORE, José Aníbal. Dyslipidemia in the elderly. An. Fac. Cienc. Méd. (Asunción) [online]. 2005, vol.38, n.1-2, pp.63-67. ISSN 1816-8949.

It is well known that dyslipidemia is an integral part of the aging process but is difficult to establish a direct relationship with its incidence on atherosclerosis among the elder people because this is a process that takes a long time to develop. Although in less degree than in the mid-adult population, dyslipidemia is regarded as an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease to take into account elderly. This study has been designed to analysed dyslipidemia in a population of male and female more than 60 years of age looking at its relationship with other diseases and in particular with hypertension and diabetes. It was found that more than half of the dyslipidemic population studied had hypertension and 25% were diabetic. It is interesting to mention that dyslipidemia was more prevalent among women. There is no agreement about the emphasis that should be made on treatment for the elder population.
