Abstract

A change currently evident in several countries is the accelerated process of population aging that has its effects on various aspects of the development and functionality of society. To describe the perception of food security according to sex and educational level in older adults in the peri-urban area of Asunción, an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study with primary data was performed including 100 adults over 60 years of age, of both sexes from the periurban area of Asunción. The research was carried out respecting the ethical principles, sociodemographic and food security data were collected through the Access Scale Household Food Insecurity (HFIAS)adapted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). A predominance of food safety was observed in most of the instrument indicators, with higher percentages in those with a university degree. Regarding food safety it was observed in indicator number three, that inquired about the variety of foods, that 99% did not present this limitation, likewise in item five, 95% of older adults reported that in the last four weeks they did not have to eat less due to restriction in access to food. In terms of sex, the females were the ones who presented food insecurity in indicators three and five respectively. A predominance of food safety was found in the elderly adults of the peri-urban area of Asunción included in this study.
