INVERNIZZI-MENDOZA, Carlos Rafael et al. Clinical characteristics of implants most commonly used in patients attending the Oral Implantology Professorship of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Autonomous University of Asunción (UAA). Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2019, vol.17, n.1, pp.75-81. ISSN 1812-9528.  https://doi.org/10.18004/mem.iics/1812-9528/2019.017(01)75-081.

Dental implants are root substitutes placed in the maxillary bones in order to replace one or more missing teeth and restore the functionality and aesthetics lost due to their absence. This was a retrospective descriptive observational study, where the records of 139 patients, that attended the Implantology Chair of the Autonomous University of Asunción from 2012 to 2018, were analyzed. Ninety eight of them met the inclusion criteria. The Excel spreadsheet and the Epiinfo v7.1 program (CDC, Atlanta, USA) were used for these analyzes. Of the total of 98 analyzed files, 59 (60.2%) corresponded to female patients and 39 (39.8%) to male. The average age of the patients was 44.2 years (SD±12.6). Regarding systemic diseases, diabetes and arterial hypertension were present in 6.1% respectively and cardiac diseases in 2.1%; only 10/98 reported that they smoked. Regarding the implants, we observed that a total of 217 were performed. There were 141 (64,97%) cylindrical implants and 76 (35,03%) conical implants. The implanted areas were observed, in the upper jaw, 129 implants were placed (59.44%) while in the lower 88 (40.56%). The most used implants were those of medium length and diameter. Regarding bone regeneration, the most frequent procedure was the maxillary sinus lift. In the future, it is important to carry out evaluation work on success or failure of the implants performed to take corrective measures and improve patient service.
