Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2019, vol.17, n.1, pp.32-38. ISSN 1812-9528.  https://doi.org/10.18004/mem.iics/1812-9528/2019.017(01)32-038.

Smoking is a global public health problem. Nicotine dependence and its degrees are determined by individual genetic and psychosocial factors, as well as the combination of these. This research evaluated nicotine dependence and its relationship with stress in personnel of hospital institutions of the Naguanagua Municipality of Carabobo State. The research was descriptive, with a transversal and non-experimental design. The sample consisted of 50 subjects categorized as a group of health professionals (GS) of the Naguanagua Municipality, all with smoking and a control group of 50 smokers (GC), with similar educational level, but without working in health care centers. The Fagerström Test was applied to measure the degree of nicotine dependence, and the psychosomatic test was used for the degree of stress. The groups were homogenous in terms of age and the predominance of the male gender was evident in both study groups. There was an association between the work area and the degree of nicotine dependence (DND), the GS presented higher DND (p = 0.000). The DND and the degree of stress were not associated with gender. A significant and positive association was found (r: 0.064 p = 0.000) between the DND and the degree of stress. In conclusion, the degree of nicotine dependence was moderate to high in the group of health workers and was significantly associated with stress.

Palabras clave : smoking; Fagerström Test; stress; health care professional.
