MARTINEZ-LOCIO, Liliana  e  HERMOSILLA, Míguela. Reasons for breastfeeding abandonment in mothers with children under 2 years of age. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.2, pp.73-78. ISSN 1812-9528.  https://doi.org/10.18004/mem.iics/1812-9528/2017.015(02)73-078.

Breastfeeding (BF) is the infant natural form of nutrition, which adapts to the child nutritional and immunological requirements. It fully supplies the nutrients until six months and complementarily until two years of age. Not only is the child benefited but also the mother. In spite of all the benefits provided by BF, Paraguay has one of the lowest rates o maternal BF. That is why this study aimed to establish the reasons of BF abandonment before the recommended time in mothers with children under two years of age, who attended the Maternal and Child Hospital of Fernando de la Mora through a observational descriptive cross-sectional study. The sample was constituted by 60 mothers with children under two years old who attended the hospital on the days the data for the survey were collected and who accepted to participate. Seventy seven percent of the mothers had knowledge about the importance of breastfeeding and the immunity provided to the child, however, only 20% of them implemented the BF exclusively and 28% complementarily. Reasons to abandon BF before the recommended time reported by the mothers in decreasing order were: insufficient milk, work, rejection of the child, no longer wanted to breastfeed.
