MAIDANA, Gladys Mabel et al. Factors determining non-compliance with drug therapy on diabetes patients. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2016, vol.14, n.1, pp.70-77. ISSN 1812-9528.  https://doi.org/10.18004/Mem.iics/1812-9528/2016.014(01)70-077.

Non-compliance with therapy is very frequent in patients and constitutes a global issue. It prevents the possibility of avoiding the morbidity and mortality associated with chronic diseases. The aim of this study was to describe the factors that influence the pharmacological treatment compliance of diabetic patients. A prospective descriptive observational study was performed interviewing diabetic patients attending the National Diabetes Program. A questionnaire designed for the study included information about compliance with pharmacological treatment besides glycemia and glycosylated hemoglobin values. The number of patients was 127; 65% was female, their average age was 53 years old, the average evolution time of the disease was 11 years, 51.2% had primary school level, 60% lived together and 28% of the patients showed glycosylated hemoglobin values of ≤6,5%. Thirteen point four percent reported not complying, complying sometimes or not remembering the instructions given by the professionals being the most frequent reasons for not complying: forget in 58.8%, use of several medications 29.4%, and lack of drug availability 29.4%. Oblivion and multi-medication were the most frequent causes of non-compliance with pharmacological treatment. These findings will allow decision making in order to help patients to improve compliance with drug therapy.
