The objective of this research was to analyze the perception of graduates about the utility that master and doctoral courses have on them. This was a retrospective cross-sectional study with analytical component that used the "reflective thinking" as strategy. Doctoral and master graduates from the National University of Asuncion during 2000 to 2009 period using a census type sampling. The findings revealed that 65.4% was promoted at work after the post-graduate courses and from this, 58.8% work exclusively as a professor. The qualitative variables that had the most positive perception were: ability to conduct research projects and ability to communicate scientific issues (in both cases, 84.6% of the respondents claimed that they had improved a lot), while the least positive perception was in the professional prestige that these master and doctoral courses provided (57.8% of the respondents said they had improved a lot). There was positive correlation (r=0.7) between technical influence in the working field and professional prestige and between ability to solve organizational problems at work and usefulness of knowledge in their functions (r=0.5). In the comparison of means before and after postgraduate courses, the most significant variables were Research Projects (p <0.0001) and Tutorials (p = 0.007), while the variables Number of Indexed Publications and Editorials, Prologues and Columns were not significant. This work provides elements that allow us to deduce that the courses have positive utility perceived by the graduates, and also to deduce that the courses fulfill the function which is to generate a society of knowledge.
