Resumen

SOSA, L et al. Frequency of dislipidemia and nutritional state in schoolchildren of Paraguayan rural areas. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2014, vol.12, n.1, pp.41-50. ISSN 1812-9528.

The worldwide prevalence of dislypidemia in children and adults has increased in the last decade. In our country, circulatory diseases are the first cause of death. The frequency of dislypidemia, nutritional state and factors associated to dislypidemias in schoolchildren of four public rural schools was determined. This was a cross-sectional descriptive observational study with consecutive sampling carried out in a population of schoolboys and girls aged 5 to 13 years old from April 2008 to September 2009. The nutritional state was determined by BMI according to CDC 2000 and colesterol and triglycerides blood levels by enymatic methods. A survey collected family backgrounds about dislypidemia, physical activity and food habits. Fifty nine percent of the 182 schoolchildren included in the study presented dislypidemia, 33% had moderated or high risk for colesterol levels and 41% moderated or high risk for triglycerids levels while 8% had overweight or obesity. In relation to risk factors associated to dislypidemia, 60% ate lean meat at least two to three times a week and 56% of the children, who had parents with dislypidemia backgrounds, showed risk hipercholesterolemia. The prevalence of dislypidemia found in this population is worrisome showing that it is necessary to introduce educational strategies aimed at improving food habits in the educational institutions.

Palabras clave : dislypidemia; cholesterol; triglycerids; nutritional state; children.
