Resumen

OJEDA, A et al. Frecuencia de insuficiencia de Vitamina D en adultos jóvenes sanos de Asunción: Frequency of Vitamin D insufficiency in healthy young adults of Asunción. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2014, vol.12, n.1, pp.26-32. ISSN 1812-9528.

Insufficient serum vitamin D is associated with various disorders with high prevalence at global and regional levels. In our country, there are not published studies related to this matter. In this descriptive, observational study with analytical component, the levels of vitamin D and the prevalence of its insufficiency were determined in young people and also the possible associations with known risk factors like sun exposure, sunscreen use and lack of consumption of vitamin D-enriched foods were analyzed. One hundred medical students and members of the staff of the Hospital de Clinicas of the National University of Asuncion, Paraguay were included. Participants were aged 20 to 30 years and 69% of them were women. The mean concentration of vitamin D was 17.6 ± 6.25 ng/dl (range: 4-38); 53% of the participants had insufficient levels of vitamin D (10-20 ng/dL) and 11% had vitamin D deficiency (less than 10 ng/dL). Although the individuals who reported consumption of dairy products and non-use of sunscreen had higher levels of vitamin D, the difference was not statistically significant. A high frequency of vitamin D insufficiency was found in this population in agreement with similar studies carried out at worldwide and regional levels. Vitamin D supplementation is recommended in the population to prevent disorders associated with the deficiency.

Palabras clave : vitamin D; deficiency; sun exposure; young adults.
